THE TASTINGS:

BERNHEIM ORIGINAL KENTUCKY STRAIGHT WHEAT WHISKEY  Bernheim Original Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey is the first truly new variety of American straight whiskey introduced since Prohibition. Bernheim is the first whiskey to use winter wheat as its primary grain creating a soft, sweet flavor and medium finish. Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey is produced at the namesake Bernheim Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky as a “small batch” American Whiskey and is aged in Rickhouse Y at Heaven Hill’s Bardstown, Nelson County facilities. The release is a unique and award-winning whiskey, including Whisky Magazine’s Gold Editors Choice award and in 2008 and 2009, Bernheim was named “World’s Best Wheat Whiskey” at Whisky Magazine’s World Whisky Awards. As a straight whiskey, it meets the same criteria as Bourbon or rye — aged a minimum of two years in a new, charred oak barrel, distilled at less than 160 proof, contain no coloring, flavoring or blending agents — but Bernheim’s unique profile and mixability with a variety of juices and liqueurs open a whole new range of cocktailian possibilities.

LARCENY BOURBON  Larceny is the heir to the wheated Bourbons that make up the historic Old Fitzgerald franchise that Heaven Hill acquired in 1999.  In fact, it is the somewhat controversial history of John E. Fitzgerald and his eponymous Bourbon brand that provides the story, and name, to Larceny Bourbon. Larceny Bourbon continues the Old Fitzgerald tradition of using wheat in place of rye as the third or “small” grain in the whiskey’s grain recipe, or mashbill as it is commonly known.  The use of winter wheat replaces the spicier, fruitier flavor notes that rye provides with a softer, rounder character that is the hallmark of Old Fitzgerald and other “wheated” Bourbons. Larceny is a true small batch Bourbon produced from dumps of 100 or fewer barrels that have been selected from Heaven Hill’s open rick warehouses in Nelson County, Kentucky.  Larceny is drawn from barrels that have aged from 6 to 12 years at high storage, and is bottled at a full-bodied 92 proof, or 46% alcohol by volume.

RITTENHOUSE RYE  Produced in the tradition of the classic Pennsylvania or “Monongahela” rye whiskys, Rittenhouse is a much acclaimed rye now enjoying a comeback throughout the country as today’s sophisticated American whisky consumer re-discovers classic whisky styles. Likewise, the brand is beloved by mixologists for its robust style and enjoys a renaissance as cocktails regain popularity. Available in the standard 80° bottling or in a special Bottled-In-Bond 100° expression, Rittenhouse is produced in the tradition of the classic rye whiskys that were once the preeminent American whisky style, kept alive through the lean years by Heaven Hill and two other distilleries.

PIKESVILLE STRAIGHT RYE WHISKEY  Prohibition shuttered most of the once-booming Maryland Rye industry, but Pikesville, produced since the 1890’s, re-emerged in 1936 and became the lone brand to keep this style of Rye alive. Having stored away extra-aged barrels, Heaven Hill reclaims the past with Pikesville Straight Rye Whiskey. Pikesville is a high-proof, super-premium straight rye whiskey, drawn from specially selected barrels aged at least 6 years. Rye Whiskey is enjoying a renaissance, led by mixologists and aficionados who enjoy its full flavor, its mixability and its long and storied history.

EVAN WILLIAMS SINGLE BARREL VINTAGE BOURBON  Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage Bourbon is bottled solely from one barrel hand-selected by Master Distillers Parker and Craig Beam, not from the mingling of many barrels, which is the practice for standard blended and Small Batch Bourbons. Like a fine wine, each bottle of Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage Bourbon contains a date telling when it was put in oak and bottled, in addition to the exact serial number of the single barrel from which it was drawn. The elegant bottle is sealed with a cork stopper, finished in black wax and features a distinctive label that reflects the hand-crafted care that goes into the making of this Bourbon. Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage has won five “Whiskey of the Year” awards and is the most critically-acclaimed specialty Bourbon produced by Heaven Hill Distilleries, the world’s second largest holder of aging Bourbon.

HENRY MCKENNA SINGLE BARREL KENTUCKY STRAIGHT BOURBON  Henry McKenna’s credentials are well known as “Kentucky’s finest table whiskey.” But now, Heaven Hill Master Distillers have created Henry McKenna Single Barrel Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Every bottle is filled entirely from a single barrel that has aged through 40 Kentucky seasons (10 years). This quality Bourbon is rich in tradition and heritage, and builds on the popularity of the Single Barrel and Small Batch Bourbons. Henry McKenna Single Barrel is the only extra aged Bottled-in-Bond Single Barrel Bourbon, indicating it meets exacting U.S. government standards for age and proof. The label on each bottle of Henry McKenna Single Barrel contains handwritten authentication of the exact barrel number and the date it was barreled.

ELIJAH CRAIG SMALL BATCH  Elijah Craig Small Batch is a true Small Batch premium Bourbon, and had that distinction before the term even existed. Bottled exclusively from Bourbon between 8 and 12-year-old, the brand carries the name of the Rev. Elijah Craig, the man who discovered the method of making true Kentucky Bourbon when he stored his wares in barrels that had been charred in a fire. Elijah Craig is critically acclaimed. It was awarded a double gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.  It has twice been awarded “Best of the Best” from Whisky Magazine.
